- They say a traveling man has a girl in every town. Jack Gardener thought he had one in Indianapolis, but he was muchly mistaken. James Rickert, also a knight of the grip, made an appointment with two beautiful young ladies, one for his friend, Gardener. The girls didn't care much for their escorts, so gave them the slip. At the hotel that evening, Gardener discovers that he has a pair of lady's gloves in his pocket. Miss Busybody, in the next room, with her eye glued to the keyhole, discover Gardener with the gloves. She is not long in noticing Gardener's wife. Rickert, while writing a letter to his home, finds the blotter which had blotted the letter that Miss Busybody had written to Mrs. Gardener. Holding the blotter to the mirror, the writing told the terrible story. When Mrs. Gardener arrived and her husband's traveling bag is searched at the suggestion of Miss Busybody, they discover a new suit for Gardener's boy and the gloves missing. Mrs. Gardener orders Miss Busybody from the room. Hubby forgives his wife for thinking he was any other than he should' have been.
- Mutt and his dear colleague Jeff have the blues. While Jeff falls to thinking, Mutt, being in doubt as to what to do, takes a shove. Most of the time he manages to wipe his razor on the face of the shining dome of the hard-thinking partner. Once, however, he uses a piece of newspaper, and an advertisement, "Police Wanted," meets his gaze. Mutt promptly decides to join the force, much to Jeff's displeasure. At Police Headquarters he is thoroughly examined, physically and otherwise. Mutt becomes a guardian of the peace. Jeff is disconsolate and lonely. He, too, yearns for the blue uniform; but nature has been unkind to him. Roaming about the streets, he comes to a telegraph office. A large sign, "Messengers Wanted," causes him to halt and think. He finally decides to become one of the boys in blue. While "showing off" at the Police Headquarters, Mutt is astounded to see his confrere in uniform chatting pleasantly with the captain. Jeff has just delivered a message apprising the police officer of a planned robbery for that evening. Mutt is promptly detailed on the job. He starts out like a conqueror, but the burglars go about their work with Mutt as a witness. He does not arrest them because, well, because they refuse to believe him a policeman. At the station, when the facts are known, the captain and other policemen gently pick up Mutt and tenderly throw him out. Full of life and energy, Jeff comes upon his friend lying bruised and hurt on the sidewalk. He offers consolation, but Mutt will have none of it. Was it not Jeff and the message he delivered that caused his downfall? Mutt must be revenged. They're off! Stick in hand, Mutt chases Jeff over the marathon route. A friendly telegraph pole ends the run, for Jeff scales to the top and waves an affectionate adieu to his foiled chum below. And now, Mutt and Jeff no longer have the blues!

- Samuel Dobson is about to attend a banquet given by some of the political leaders with whom he wishes to be in touch. It begins to look as though he would have to stay away, for his dress trousers have not come home from the tailor's. Though he is a fat and good-natured man, he is much worried, but worry is turned to rejoicing at the sight of the boy with the box. Joy is short lived. The blundering tailor has made the legs a full two inches too long. Dobson implored his wife to cut them down for him, but she pleads a headache. Her maiden sister is shocked at the suggestion and the daughter of the house hasn't time, she declares. Dobson starts to dress on the promise of Mrs. Dobson that she will try and do the work when her headache is better, and presently she returns and makes the desired alterations. The maiden lady sees the trousers thrown over the back of the chair and notes that it is almost time for Dobson to be starting. She cuts off two inches from the legs and goes her way. The little daughter repents her refusal and she, too, makes a cut and hands the garment to her father. Mrs. Dobson is shocked to see six bits of cloth upon the floor and she is investigating when Dobson enters. Instead of being two inches too long they are now four inches too short, and a generous four inches at that. You can turn up your trousers when they are too long, but you cannot turn them down when they are too short, and Dobson does not go to the banquet, while the family console with him.
- The three chimps are members of a trained animal act and when their owner finds that carpenters who have been building his house are about to go on strike he puts the monkeys to work to finish the job.
- Jerry is in dire dread of policemen and exits hastily at the approach of any one of the law's minions. The story opens showing Jerry caught by two mounted police, who drag him along the roadway. He escapes their vigilance and wanders to a nearby wood where he overhears the plot of two highwaymen to hold up a passing automobile by pointing guns without cartridges. There being no need to fear empty revolvers Jerry follows the plotters as they are in the act of robbing Mr. Rich and his pretty daughter he intervenes and by the use of a discarded policeman's club sends the highwaymen into dreamland. Out of gratitude Mr. Rich, who is afflicted with the gout, appoints his savior as his nurse, in which capacity Jerry is a dubious success. At the Rich home awkwardness in handling Mr. Rich causes ructions between the family members and the servants, and as he wheels Mr. Rich through the streets he collides with people, poles and walls, finally letting the wheelchair stand unprotected in a busy thoroughfare. A flying automobile crashes into it and sends its occupant to the sidewalk beyond buried wreckage. The actions of Jerry and Mr. Rich have created such a disturbance that the officers decide to lock up the disturbers, to which suggestion Jerry and Mr. Rich acquiesce under pressure.

- "Fatty" is very lazy, and when he goes in the morning to milk the cows and attend to his farm duties, he takes a little nap by the haystack, but his father always catches him and keeps him moving. The object of Fatty's devotion is Lucy Lee. Zeke, a long, gawky young country lad, also has a liking for Lucy, He spends most of his time down by the water, fishing. Lucy, being very fond of fishing, goes with Zeke when he comes around on this particular morning, leaving Fatty looking after them longingly. Fatty cannot stand his loneliness, so he goes to the water's edge, where he finds the two young fishers. He takes a dime novel from his pocket and reads all about heroes and their daring exploits. Lucy sees it, grabs it and goes away with Zeke to read it. Fatty is found sitting on the boat landing and is shoved into the water by his irate father. When Fatty drags his weary steps homeward he is afraid to go in to his father, and so hides in the chicken coop. A chicken thief enters and is caught by Fatty, who rushes out and shuts the door. Fatty calls his father, who comes with a long rifle and catches the thief. Lucy Lee and Zeke appear and the girl realizes that Fatty is a hero. Immediately she forgets all about Zeke, and Fatty wins the day and the glory.
- Felix goes to work on the fatal morn that is the time setting of this film. He finally gets to his work after taking a forced ride on a moving "dolly." His work for that day consists of shingling a roof belonging to Tad. He goes to work and makes a mess of the whole affair, and then gets into a quarrel with Tad and his two boys. He finally sets fire to the house and then when it all collapses is thrown into the nearby river. But that is not the end, as he manages to throw the whole tribe of Tad into the river for revenge. This is not all that happens in this little comic classic, but in any case it is enough to know that in the end Felix comes to grief.
